Novel versus short story

Orange's novel will ultimately focus on convergence. Essentially, he supplies a variety of narratives from Native Americans who all have unique hardships and goes to demonstrate their interrelatedness. His employ of humor comes succinctly and in the form of punchy sarcasm and blatant irony. Ie. 'the drone' and casino jokes. While the humor presents often in short-form, the drawn-out nature of a novel, versus a short story, allows for story to incorporate the humor into the fabric of the plot. There are obvious instances where the characters, otherwise unaware of each other, see humor similarly, this being a nod to their assumed shared ancestry and likeness as Native Americans. The reader is allowed a glimpse into this world as a result of their intimate position supplied by Orange. While it is difficult to see an overall interconnectedness in the beginning stages of the novel, what Orange makes clear is the shared hardships felt by all of the characters as a result of their ethnicity. But, on a lighter note, the characters share in their misfortune by corroborating each other with similar tastes of humor from widely understood and felt experiences.
